Blue
Ridge Mountain Host Region Offers Mountain Adventures and Foothills Fun
at Lake Lure
By Lydia Quinn
The Blue Ridge Parkway is an entrée to the mountain adventures
and foothills fun of Rutherford County in the Blue Ridge Mountain Host
region. Off of the Parkway, exit near the Blue Ridge Parkway Visitor Center
between mileposts 384 and 385 and head East on Highway 74-A. Be sure to
stop in Chimney Rock Village, where visitors can make a brisk tubing run
down the roaring Rocky Broad River. Then visit Chimney Rock State Park,
recently preserved as North Carolina's newest state park. Perched high
atop Chimney Rock, capture a spectacular view of Hickory Nut Gorge and
720-acre Lake Lure. Visitors can also see Hickory Nut Falls, recognizable
landscape from the final dramatic scenes of "Last of the Mohicans,"
filmed here in the early '90s. Other outdoor activities range from dinner
cruises, fishing and water skiing on Lake Lure, to golf, horseback riding
and hiking.<<more>>
Nantahala
River Rafting is Fun For All
By Jesse R Wojdylo
The Nantahala River, located in the Western part of North Carolina offers
some very interesting outdoor activities. The most popular outdoor activity
on the river is white water rafting. Each and every year thousands of
tourists flock to the river to get away from the summer heat. The river
itself is about 48 degrees because the water is pulled from the bottom
of Nantahala Lake. In essence, the water that you are rafting on has not
seen sunshine in years.<<more>>

What comes to mind when you think of the Outer Banks? Obvious answers
may include the stunning, white shorelines of the North Carolina coast,
the tranquil breezes and lush tall grass filled with wildlife. You may
think, too, of the wild mustangs that trot along the shore, answering
to no master. You may think of history,: the flight experiments at Kitty
Hawk or the famous Lost Colony outdoor drama, the longest running play
of its kind, in Manteo.<<more>>
